The Hawthorn estate

The Hawthorn Estate is a late-18th-century residence set within historic grounds that have evolved through generations of careful stewardship. The client wanted to preserve the estate's heritage while creating a landscape that better reflected modern living. Our approach respected the existing character of the site, allowing history and contemporary design to coexist naturally.

Every stage of the project began with observing the land itself. Mature trees, existing topography, natural drainage patterns, and long-established planting informed each design decision. Rather than replacing what already worked, we enhanced the landscape through thoughtful interventions that strengthened its identity.

The formal lawns were reimagined as species-rich wildflower meadows that provide year-round interest and support local biodiversity. New pathways were carefully positioned to improve circulation while preserving established root systems and important sightlines across the estate. Outdoor gathering spaces were integrated seamlessly into the landscape, creating places for quiet reflection as well as entertaining guests.

Planting focused on native and climate-adapted species selected for seasonal beauty, ecological value, and long-term resilience. Sustainable drainage solutions, permeable materials, and low-maintenance planting palettes reduced environmental impact while improving the overall health of the site.

Natural stone, weathered timber, and handcrafted detailing were chosen to complement the estate's traditional architecture without competing with it. Every material was selected for durability, authenticity, and its ability to age gracefully within the landscape.
